A View from the Loft has come a long way since its humble beginnings as The Loft Literary Center’s publication. Cut and paste was the mantra in 1979 when the View was born—not in the way we think of those terms now. The process involved scissors and glue to create the four pages of news about the Loft, its members, and the written word. The cover of the May 1979 issue, for example, announced a benefit for the Loft featuring five local authors and music held at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The suggested donation was $2.50.

For decades, A View from the Loft was produced monthly or bimonthly. Now the View travels in 21st-century circles, arriving to its readers via the Web with new content each week. The View moved into a new home in 2010. The site gives readers more power to interact with writers. The goal, of course, is the same as in 1979. The View delivers articles about the craft of writing and the writing life. Each writer has a unique perspective and story to tell. Each story has the potential to inspire, motivate, and illuminate. It’s all in the words.

You can read lots of those words here in archived articles.
